Faces on Friday

January 21, 2011
Staring myself in the face late at night. My kids recognized the one on the left. PROGRESS!
I need to figure out how to do noses and lips in profile.
At the airport – surreptitiously sneaking glances at people waiting in the terminals.
Isn’t it funny how we draw what we THINK we see rather than what is there.
It’s taken all this time to realize how far back to draw an eye in profile.
It’s usually way back behind the nose and I’ve been drawing it too far forward.
Late at night and I don’t want to get out of bed to look in the mirror so I made up a couple faces.
The one in the middle is from a photo. Still such a long way to go – but I’m having fun!

I love sketching people in the airport. It seems like most of them these days have on headsets, are staring at computers, or both!
I'm inspired by your focused effort on portraiture. I'm thinking it is time to get back to the life drawing sessions!

Straight on and profile are really easy for me… but that 3/4 shot is KILLER! And every model sheet needs them – from both directions. >sigh< I've been told the only way to get better at it is do it, do it, do it… But making myself do it is the challenge…

love the faces Lyric! I really find it hard to draw them quickly. I can do a lovley face in an hour…..but any shorter is a problem. Maybe something I can work on this year!

Wow, I'm enjoying seeing your faces. You've inspired me. While I know I can't be disciplined enough to do a face a day right now with all the things I've got going, I do know I can do one a week. That is something I can do. So I am embracing the wonkiness of my first attempts and am hoping to find some growth at the end of the year in comfort level when faced with faces I wish to draw. I always over do them and they look old beyond their years. Thank You!

Great job.I am the same about profiles….I have a heck of a time with the lips and eyes. I try to capture the kids on the sly…they move around if they know I am drawing them…lol Airport sketches are really good, another good idea too!
