More work Abstract-A-Licious from my students at the Quintessential Quilt guild in Columbus, OH.
One of my favorite exercises for this class is called “the borrowers.”
We trace the main shapes in a well known work of art, abstracting the composition into something unique.
It’s amazing how each student can end up with something completely different even though they started with the same work of art.
Yes, BOTH of these were driver from Klimt’s Tree of Life.
If I’m remembering right, this is an Utrillo painting. (Let me know if I’m wrong – it’s highly likely.)
Every viewer sees different shapes in the painting. We try to simplify it as much as possible.
Shapes get traced, changed, and in this case, cut up and moved around as compositions take shape.

September 13, 2014 at 8:52 amI love the beaded snowflakes. Anything on blue especially dark or cobalt grabs my attention. I love decorating for Christmas. Bringing out all the stuff we’ve collected over the years. My husband was in the Army for 24 years and we moved quite a bit. So its fun to remember where we were when we picked up the Pinocchio (Italy) or the Cadet (West Point). We used to buy 3 of the special ornaments – one for us and one for each of our moms. As our boys got older we now buy 5, so they have special one too. And they are from our vacations now – trolley from San Francisco or mouse ear hats from Disney.
