Mill Wheel embroidery by Lyric kinard

Solo Show: behind the scenes

July 5, 2019

It’s down to the last few weeks of getting ready for my solo show. I would love to see you there if you are nearby Cary, NC. I’ll post the information below. In the meantime, let me show you how I’m finishing up all the details. All year I’ve been working on a series of embroideries. There are a few smaller spaces in the gallery that I thought might benefit from smaller works. In the hallway outside the main room are four beautiful window box glass cases. These small works might be just the thing they need. Regardless, it made me feel like I was accomplishing something towards getting the show ready while I was traveling. Having a “to go” project at the ready is one of my favorite ways.

I screen printed the linen with mill wheels then sealed the edges with fray check so they don’t ravel. The linen is backed with a six inch square of wool felt the machine stitched. After that I just made up the embroidery designs as I went along. There is something soothing and meditative about the process of hand stitching. And… have you seen the embroidery patterns that say “this proves I have the patience to stab something 4,000 times!”?

I’m so grateful that I don’t get car sick. I’ve made a whole stack of these on buses, airplanes, and car trips.Look for more in the next post on how I’m mounting these for presentation. In the meantime, mark your calendars and join me!

Artwork by Lyric Kinard
Poetry by Maura High
Maura High’s eloquent poetry and Lyric Kinard’s striking textile art come together in fluid harmony as they explore interactions between stone, water, and time. Inspired by the form, function, and beauty of historic mills and grindstones, Maura and Lyric riff off each others work, They’ve created a thought-provoking conversation with this collection, using both the written and the visual language.
