Pink was not my Favorite Color

January 18, 2022

I don’t know why. Well, yes I do.

Maybe I rebelled against being “girly”? Maybe the color was too bright? Who knows. I’ve never loved hot bubblegum pink. I’m so glad that American culture has loosened up and colors aren’t so gendered any more. My boys love pink. My youngest loves to wear hot pink socks and make sure they show.

Hot pink and I have a very personal color relationship and I wouldn’t ever expect anyone else to feel the same way about that color. It’s such an emotional and individual thing, people’s relationships with color. Hot pink Azaleas don’t thrill me, but Bougainvillea do.

Colors also have relationships to each other as well and as I’ve grown as an artist I’ve learned to expand my palette and rely on color relationships to each other more than on my feelings about one color. I’ve learned to love pink in relationship with other bright colors.

These two small works were terribly fun to play with. And maybe I’ve grown up a bit. I don’t hate pink any more.

Stay tuned. I’m working on a new on-demand course, all about Color Relationships. I’m having a ton of fun with it. I know you will too!

I love both of these! Keep having fun with color relationships. You’re good at it.
