If you’ve ever thought, “My art isn’t good enough,” or wondered why you keep creating when it feels like you’re stuck—you are not alone. Every artist I’ve worked with has felt this way. Let me tell you this: you are not alone. Every artist faces doubt. That’s exactly why we create spaces like this—to support each other and grow together, without fear or judgment. I also want you to know that your voice matters. What you create isn’t supposed to look like anyone else’s. Your unique ideas and life experiences shape your art, and someone out there is waiting to connect with your work. That’s one of the main reasons I created Focus your VISION, Find your VOICE course and community. Growth happens here. It’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up, experimenting, making mistakes, and discovering new things. That’s how you grow. Pause for a beat—shift to course mention I built this course because I know how hard it can be to grow on your own. After a year of incredible feedback from artists like you, I’ve refined the structure to guide you every step of the way—through lessons, practice, and critique. If you’re ready to create confidently and […]

Kestrel Michaud, one of my favorite textile artists, posted an absolutely SPOT ON video about how the jury process works. When a venue or organizer decides to create an exhibit and put out a call for entry, they often will hire one or more jurors. These people can come with all sorts of qualifications. There is no universally codified code of what and who a juror must be. The Juror or Jury must choose an exhibit from the pool of entries. The organizer gives them parameters, which can vary widely and are dependent on the venue and the goal of the exhibit. If the show will travel, the ability to store, ship, and hang an exhibit is certainly part of the equation. And this is just the beginning of the things that will determine what the final exhibit will look like. KESTREL’S JURYING EXERCISE VIDEO Go watch it!!!! You’ll be so glad you did. Kestrel also has a fantastic Patreon community. If you love her work you will love seeing HOW she works. She posts videos of her process, has projects for her members to work on, etc. She was also one of our recent guest artists at Lyric.Art, my every-day […]

So many times quilters enter shows, bound up in hopes and fears. Wishing so hard for the external validation of an award and fearing so much the harsh critique from someone who doesn’t know the heart and soul they’ve poured into their creation. If you’ve been to one of my art/design lectures or workshops you might have heard my opinions about this process. Suffice it to say that a judge’s comments may or may not have relevance to your work and that I want you to grow into a confident artist that doesn’t rely on outside validation to know the visual message you are sending is ENOUGH. The viewer’s relationship to the work is not YOUR relationship to the work. That is as it should be. Their lens of experience is unique to them and colors everything they see. As is yours. If we all saw the world the same way, thought the same way about art, we would be living in an Orwellian world of robotic automatons. I’d like to point you to a lovely essay by Deborah Boschert about her experience judging one of the most prestigious quilt shows in the world. It’s honest and informative and will […]

I absolutely love architecture. In college I did all the prerequisites to enter the graduate architecture program at the U of Utah (in addition to my English major.) When I was in Chicago last spring for the H&H (handcrafts and hobbies) conference I took an extra day and wandered through Oak Park, an area with a dense concentration of structures by Frank Lloyd Wright. I spent ages wandering through this space and learning about how closely the design reflects the beliefs in the Unitarian Universalist faith. Simple things such as having the congregation exit on either side of the pulpit, heading towards the minister instead of away. The dominance of vertical lines and the clean structure of the ornamentation speaks to me. I found the stair structure in the upper pews to be fascinating with maze like corridors to climb to reach them and then so much up and down to get to the seats. Most definitely not accessible but felt like a metaphor of life’s journeys. I am always conflicted after reading biographies of famous artists who were terrible to their wives or any of the women in their lives. It stains my love for their creations. Ready to PLAY? During this fun and free flowing workshop you will loosen up, play around, and create a small stack of art cards. Use them for mailing, framing, or simply take the time to explore and learn without any of the usual pressure to “make good art.” Expect lots of learning and laughter, a little creative chaos, and the opportunity to make new friends. Students will be given directions that teach various design basics such as color schemes, focal point, proportion, formulas for making a face, etc. Come away with a good review of the elements and principles of art.

And a little bit of that…. It’s been ages since I’ve paid attention here. How are you? Well I hope? I would just say I’ve been super busy but I’m looking back on my adult life and can’t find a time when that wasn’t the case. Actually – thinking of my teen years – same. I used to play in so many different musical groups that I had performances pretty much every weekend. Then it was kids. Five over the years – toddlers at home for 18 years. That’s a very long time. Right now I feel like an empty nester with only one at home and that one plays in so many musical groups that…. it’s like de ja vu. It’s super rare for more than one or two of them to be here at the same time. For those of you who followed the journey with Big E’s motorcycle wreck; he’s doing well and will have front teeth again by the end of the month. These days I spend most of my time at my computer. Between the Global Quilt Connection, the Academy for Virtual Teaching, and the Lyric.Art everyday art school, I’m teaching teaching teaching and not […]
