It’s amazing how time gets away from me. July flew by.
Judy Coates Perez has produced two DVD Workshops with Quilting Arts and I’ve already told you that she’s one of my favorite artists. Both are simply done and straightforward. I think they were early on in the line-up of QA’s DVD’s as the set is spare rather than the fun studio background in the current DVD’s. No matter because the techniques that Judy presents are solid and informative.
In Painted Cloth for Mixed Media Judy takes you step by step through the creation of a mixed media painted cloth. She shows you how to adhere various collage papers to cloth, then apply wonderfully juicy layers of color. Then another layer of lovely painted design is applied so that your first two layers just peek through. She ends up with a wonderfully rich and complex piece of cloth that can be stitched into used for a quilt top or formed into any fun accessory you choose. Judy’s style is at once both beautifully simple and richly complex at the same time.

August 15, 2010 at 10:04 pmI've done a little bit of piddling about with fabric/paper stuff – mostly the strength of the result seems to depend on the quality and number of layers you use. If you want really strong results (like for a grocery tote bag), use more than one layer of fabric and a good gel medium – just my experience. Gotta use those long stitches, too as the holes don't 'heal' the way holes in fabric will do.

Thanks for featuring Judy's work. I have her DVD about painting the bird, and love her painted wholecloth quilts.
I just recently made some fabric paper, but have not used it for a project yet. I made a collage which I donated as a prize to the Pink Artist project a couple years ago. It had some papers as well as fabrics and turned out well.

August 15, 2010 at 6:11 amHello! I am inspired by both your work and Judy Coates Perez's also. I was afraid of mixing paper and fabric together until I tried it ala Kelli Perkins' book. I use a heavy jeans type needle in my machine when stitching fabric and paper mixed pieces and just play – no tearing out. Thank you for including me in the DVD drawing!!

August 14, 2010 at 5:48 pmLOVE Judy's work…one of my favorite artists too. I've used tissue paper laminated to muslin with glue in an art quilt, overpainted with a wash of Lumiere paint. Gorgeous results…just make sure where you put your stitching…you can't rip it out and start over, it leaves holes.

I've sewn paper into quite a few collages. Early on, they were magazine pages that I didn't treat in any way. Now, I add gel medium to most paper. I've also used paper that I've painted, printed text straight from the computer, and various souveniers and scraps. Always fun!

August 14, 2010 at 4:20 pmActually not sure this is how you mean? but I have used paper as backing to sew on…don't mean paper peicing…just mean as a collage type backing and sewed fabrics and paper together…was quite easy yet think it is a little rougher on needles?

August 14, 2010 at 2:55 pmHi Lyric – I've sewn paper onto fabric for artsy stuff, and found that the stitch size is very important – the longer the stitch the less chance of tearing. Interfacing helps if the purpose of the piece gets 'used' and isn't wall art. I love combining mediums, and you can take credit for inspiring me to try! And boy oh boy would I love a Judy Coates Perez dvd!

I've used paper in my work quite a bit. I find that coating the paper with gel medium makes it sturdier. I appliquéd paper cocktail umbrellas to a journal quilt years ago.

August 14, 2010 at 5:51 amHello, Lyric! I love seeing that you are doing well. I fondly remember visiting you many (goodness, too many!) years ago.
I have sewn paper on to fabric for a handbag that I didn't think would take much wear and tear. I had to fiddle with my tensions to keep the thread from tearing through the paper (brown paper bag) and ended up putting interfacing on the back to minimize the problem. It looks very much like leather, though, and I'm pleased with the result!
